On February 20, 2014 Maria was diagnosed with a brain tumor in her left frontal lobe. At the time Maria was on vacation with her husband Pat, and her brother in-law and sister in-law, Dom and Carole. Prior to the trip Maria had been having trouble using the fingers on her right hand as a result of a fall on the ice. While on vacation and after a trip to the ER, Maria's health issue was discovered.
On February 28, 2014 Dr. Inam Kureshi, Chief of Neurosurgery at Hartford Hospital, performed a craniotomy on Maria to remove the tumor.
